Today, our family layed my grandfather, Morgan Colquett, to rest. Grandaddy was the last of my grandparents that are living. This is the first time that CarrieBeth and Megan have been "up close and personal" to someone who has passed away. Although grandaddy couldn't always remember his grandchildren's names (haha), they did get to spend a good amount of time with him. There are two things that stick out in my mind about this week that I appreciate more than ever...
The first thing is when we were at his bedside Monday soon after he passed. Bro. Wayne Sharpe reminded me that Grandaddy had prayed to go quickly and without pain. I have heard that pancreatic cancer is very painful. I am humbled and thankful that God honored his prayer....God blessed my grandad with such a peaceful time that day. Grandaddy did not want to take his pain medication and said that he didn't have any pain. Grandaddy honored God in his life...and God blessed Grandaddy and his family with a peaceful time at the end of his life. When Bro. Wayne said that by grandaddy's bed Monday, God spoke to my own heart. God let me know through Bro. Wayne's words, that he had taken care of His child. What an honor! I do not know what people do without a relationship with God! It would be terrible to have to look at my grandaddy and wonder what had happened to him. Not only does God promise eternity to His Children, but he just had a special way of telling our family that he had taken care of grandaddy!
Another thing that sticks out in my mind is the issue of death with the girls. Call it corny, but to explain why Grandaddy's body was at the funeral home and Grandaddy was in Heaven, I had to illustrate with a peanut. My girls love boiled peanuts (yes, even though we have a peanut allergy!). I told them that each peanut has a shell. Inside that shell is the most important part. Only in our house could I compare my grandad to a peanut in a time like this...Through Grandaddy passing, I had the opportunity to share with them about our bodies staying here on earth while our spirits depart to Heaven. They actually handled it VERY well! They understood that his body is only a shell and that he is in Heaven praising God! (I also had to insert that my grandmother is probably elbowing him right now!!)
I am so proud of my memories with all of my grandparents. Each grandparent had such special qualities in them. As a child, I have a vivid memory of my Grandmother and Grandaddy Colquett reading the Bible each night. I would sit there...at times I would go in and out of concentrating, but all in all, it has left a huge impression on my life. I have big shoes to fill in raising my own children. They were so consistent! I have lessons to learn from them!
Nat-- I'm so glad you shared those memories. I have lots of memories of your Grandaddy at Civitan events with my Grandpa. I"m sure they are hanging out together talking about the good ole days! Sorry about you loss!!
